To the Welcome Baptist Church Family,

Individual reactions to the Covid19 crisis range from complacency to cautious concern. The truth is Covid19 may have been politicized, but it is a real virus which has proven itself to be highly contagious and deadly. Throughout this crisis, mass gatherings of people from diverse regions have been especially discouraged. The church camp experience includes mass gatherings of people from diverse regions and even states.

Welcome Baptist church is passionate about people. It is this passion which fuels our concern for the campers and counselors we would take to church camp, as well as the families and communities they would return to after camp, and the other church groups we would encounter while at camp. The CDC has issued guidelines for summer camps. These guidelines include face coverings both indoors and outdoors and especially in situations when social distancing is difficult. In our experience at the camp facilities we attend this means face coverings must be worn during all Chapel events, in the cafeteria, and in the line leading to the cafeteria.

The CDC guidelines also address social distancing between groups attending camps. In other words, our group could not mingle with groups from other churches as we have in the past. We could go on but perhaps you get the picture. The church camp experience would be very different this summer. As disappointed as our youth are about not attending camp, they would most likely be more disappointed with the experience they would have if we did attempt church camp this summer. And then there is this. None of the counselors want to spend a week policing our youth and enforcing the CDC guidelines.

Please understand we care too much about our youth to let them ignore the guidelines. At Welcome we do not teach our young people that it is okay to violate the rules. We know rules are often unpopular, and occasionally superfluous, but we do no service to your children if we teach them to ignore the rules which have been set in place for the safety of the camp and the campers.

We will be planning safe activities for our own youth group. But Welcome is too passionate about people to risk anyone’s health and/or life by taking our youth to camp during this Covid19 summer.

I am praying we all have a safe summer.

God Bless,

Brother Charlie
